Back-to-Birth Records: How Far Back Airworthiness Evidence Must Go
"Back-to-birth" is one of those phrases everyone in continuing airworthiness uses and few outside it fully appreciate. It captures a demanding idea: for certain parts of an aircraft, the paperwork has to tell an unbroken story from the moment the part entered service to today. Where that story has a gap, the part's value — and sometimes its usability — is in question, regardless of its physical condition.

What "back-to-birth" actually means
Back-to-birth traceability means being able to account for a part's complete history: its origin and certification, every installation and removal, and the accumulated life it has used, all the way back to when it was first placed in service. It's not a general tidiness requirement — it's a specific, provable lineage for the items where history determines airworthiness.
The reason is straightforward. For some parts, whether they're airworthy today depends not only on their current condition but on how much of their approved life they've consumed. You can only know that if the record is complete.
Where it matters most: life-limited parts and major components
The sharpest case is life-limited parts (LLPs) — components with a hard, certified life limit expressed in flight hours, cycles, or calendar time, after which they must be removed regardless of condition. Engine discs and certain rotor and structural components are classic examples. If you can't prove how much life an LLP has used, you generally can't safely assume the remainder — and a part with an unprovable history may have to be treated as expired.
Major components, engines, landing gear, and other rotables with maintenance and modification histories also depend on traceable records, both for their own status and for the AD compliance attached to them.

An intact back-to-birth chain typically weaves together:
- Origin and certification — the release documentation establishing the part's provenance.
- Life history — the accumulated hours, cycles, or calendar time, and the events that added to them.
- Installation and removal history — where the part has been fitted, and when.
- Maintenance and modification records — work performed, and configuration changes.
- AD compliance evidence — for directives that apply to the part or its installation, the record that they were addressed.
That last item is the connection to airworthiness directives: AD compliance doesn't sit in a separate silo — it's part of the same continuous record that proves the part's story.
What a gap costs
A break in the chain is expensive in ways that aren't always obvious:
- Value. A part or aircraft with incomplete records is worth less, and harder to sell or lease, than an otherwise identical one with a clean history.
- Grounding risk. An LLP whose consumed life can't be proven may have to be removed early — real cost for a paperwork problem.
- Transfer friction. At redelivery or sale, missing records stall the transaction while the parties try to reconstruct history that should already exist.
The through-line: the physical part can be perfect and still be a liability if its record isn't.
